New to counselling? Here's what to expect...

Counselling looks different for everyone, and even deciding to begin can feel significant. This overview offers a sense of what to expect.

We start with a free 15‑minute consultation by phone or Microsoft Teams to briefly explore what’s bringing you to counselling and to arrange an initial session. I’ll then send an intake form for your contact and GP details, which are kept confidential and stored in line with GDPR.

In our first session we’ll talk more fully about what has led you here and what you hope for from therapy. You might arrive with a clear focus, no idea at all, or something in between. You’re welcome to ask questions or simply begin with whatever feels most pressing. I’ll also cover essential points around confidentiality, safety, and our working agreement.

After this, we meet weekly for 50 minutes. I usually work open‑endedly, reviewing our work together so you can reflect on what feels helpful. If you prefer a set number of sessions, we can plan for that too.

Each session is your space to bring whatever is emerging. We may draw on particular therapeutic approaches, or follow the direction that feels most meaningful to you. Many people begin without knowing exactly what they need — we’ll explore this together and shape the work around what best supports you.
